🥾 Boot

A shoe that covers the foot and ankle.

Boot

A boot covers the foot and the ankle, sometimes the calf or the whole leg. It is sturdier than a shoe by design. The first boots were practical: leather wrappings for cold, wet, or rough terrain. Soldiers, riders, and workers wore them. Fashion came later, but it came thoroughly. Today boots range from heavy hiking gear to delicate heeled styles for evening wear.

Types vary by height and purpose. Ankle boots stop at the ankle. Mid-calf boots reach the lower calf. Knee-high boots cover the calf. Over-the-knee styles extend further. Materials include leather, suede, rubber, synthetic fabrics, and combinations. Soles may be lugged for grip, flat for comfort, or heeled for style. Laces, zippers, pull tabs, and elastic panels are common closure systems.

Boots are seasonal and regional. In cold climates, insulated and waterproof boots are essential. In cities, leather ankle boots work year-round. In wet weather, rubber rain boots are the standard. Care extends their life. Leather needs conditioning and waterproofing. Suede needs brushing and protection. Rubber should be rinsed and dried away from heat. A good pair of boots, properly maintained, can last a decade or more.
