🚫 Truancy

The act of staying away from school without permission.

Truancy

Truancy is staying away from school without permission. It is not the same as an excused absence for illness or a family emergency. Truancy is unauthorized. Schools track it, report it, and sometimes punish it. In many places, parents can be fined or prosecuted for their child's truancy.

The causes are varied. Some students skip because they are bored or falling behind. Others stay home to care for siblings, avoid bullies, or work. Chronic truancy often signals deeper problems at home or at school. Punishing the student rarely fixes those.

Effective responses focus on the reasons. Mentoring, counseling, alternative schedules, and family support can bring students back. Truancy courts and fines sometimes help, but they can also push families deeper into crisis. The goal is attendance, not punishment.
