Positive Space

Positive space is the area occupied by the main subjects of a design. It is the figure, not the ground. The text on a page, the product in a photograph, the shapes in a logo. Positive and negative space define each other. You cannot have one without the other. A strong composition balances both, so the eye moves easily between the subject and its surroundings.

Designers think about positive space when arranging elements. How much of the frame should the subject fill? A close-up portrait uses mostly positive space. A wide landscape uses mostly negative space. Both can work. The choice depends on the message. Crowding positive elements together can create energy or chaos. Spacing them out can create calm or disconnection. The relationship between the two is what matters.

Working with positive space

Positive space is not more important than negative space. They are partners. Change one and the other changes too, whether the designer intends it or not.
