Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor spaces. It ranges from small gardens to large parks, from campus master plans to highway corridors. Landscape architects shape land, water, plants, and materials to create places that are functional, sustainable, and beautiful.
The work is deeply site-specific. A landscape architect studies topography, soil, hydrology, climate, and ecology. They design drainage systems, select plants, and plan paths and gathering spaces. They also consider how people will use the space and how it will change over time.
Landscape architecture overlaps with urban planning, civil engineering, and ecology. On a large project, the landscape architect may collaborate with architects, engineers, and biologists. On a small residential project, they may work alone or with a garden designer.
Sustainability is central to the field. Native plants, stormwater management, and habitat restoration are common strategies. Good landscape architecture does not just decorate a site. It improves it.
