Sanctification is the process of being made holy or set apart for God's purposes. It begins at salvation and continues throughout the Christian life. It is the work of the Holy Spirit. It is also the responsibility of the believer. The Spirit empowers. The believer cooperates. It is a partnership. It is a journey.
Sanctification has three aspects. Positional sanctification is the believer's standing in Christ. They are already holy in God's sight. Progressive sanctification is the ongoing growth in holiness. It is becoming more like Christ. Final sanctification is glorification. It is the completion of the process in heaven. The believer will be fully holy. No more sin. No more struggle. Perfect love.
Sanctification in scripture
- 1 Thessalonians 4:3: this is the will of God, your sanctification.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:23: may the God of peace sanctify you completely.
- John 17:17: sanctify them in the truth.
- Hebrews 12:14: strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
- 2 Corinthians 3:18: being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.
Sanctification is not perfectionism. It is not earning salvation. It is the fruit of salvation. It is the evidence of faith. It is the work of the Spirit. It is the pursuit of holiness. It is the battle against sin. It is the daily choice to follow Christ. It is the confession of sin. It is the reception of grace. It is the growth in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It is the transformation of the mind. It is the renewal of the heart. It is the Christian life. It is not easy. It is not quick. It is not finished until heaven. But it is real. It is happening. It is the Spirit's work. It is the believer's hope. It is the path to glory.
