Vibe refers to the emotional atmosphere of a person, place, or moment. A good vibe feels easy and positive. A bad vibe feels off, even if nothing specific has gone wrong. People pick up on vibes through body language, tone, and the overall energy in a room.
The word is flexible. Someone can have a chill vibe, a chaotic vibe, or a main-character vibe. A café can have a cozy vibe. A party can have a strange vibe after an argument. The term lets speakers name a feeling that is real but hard to pin to a single cause.
In recent years vibe has expanded further. “Vibing” can mean enjoying a song or simply existing comfortably in a situation. “Vibe check” is a playful way of assessing whether the current mood is acceptable. The core idea stays consistent: vibe is the intangible quality that shapes how a situation feels.
Because the word is so broad, it works in almost any informal context. It is less precise than more specific emotional language, yet that openness is part of its usefulness.
