📦 Cargo Hold

The space in a ship where cargo is stored.

Cargo Hold

The payload lives below deck. A cargo hold is an enclosed space within a ship’s hull designed for the stowage of cargo, bounded by the hull, bulkheads, and hatch covers or deck.

Bulk carriers have large open holds; general cargo ships may have ’tween decks; container ships use cellular guides instead of traditional holds. Hold cleanliness, ventilation, and bilge systems matter for cargo care. Before loading, holds are inspected for suitability.

During the voyage, crews monitor for water ingress, shifting, or temperature problems. Access for inspection and emergency response must remain possible. A flooded or contaminated hold can ruin an entire cargo and endanger the ship.
