🌱 Dynamic Character

A character who undergoes significant internal change during the course of a story.

Dynamic Character

A dynamic character undergoes significant internal change during a story. They learn a lesson, change their beliefs, or grow emotionally. The change is permanent and meaningful. It is the opposite of a static character, who stays the same. Dynamic characters drive the story's theme. Their transformation is the point.

Ebenezer Scrooge is a dynamic character. He starts greedy and cold. He ends generous and warm. The change is the story. Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice is dynamic. She overcomes her prejudice. She learns to see Darcy differently. Harry Potter is dynamic. He grows from a boy to a leader. The change is gradual and earned.

Dynamic character traits

Not every character needs to be dynamic. Static characters have their place. They provide stability. They highlight the change in the dynamic character. A dynamic character needs a foil. Sherlock Holmes is mostly static. He solves cases without changing. Watson is also mostly static. The interest is in the mystery, not the character arc. But in many stories, the character arc is the story. A coming-of-age novel is built on a dynamic character. A redemption arc is built on a dynamic character. The change must be believable. It must be earned. If the character changes too quickly, the reader does not buy it. If the change is too small, the reader does not care. The best dynamic characters change in ways that feel inevitable and surprising at the same time. That is the art of character development.
