🖼️ Mockup

A realistic visual representation of a design concept.

Mockup

A mockup shows what a design will look like before it is built. It is a realistic visual representation: a poster design placed on a wall, a website layout shown inside a laptop screen, a packaging concept photographed on a shelf. Mockups bridge the gap between a flat file and the physical or digital context where the work will live.

Designers use mockups in two ways. Presentation mockups help clients and stakeholders see the concept in context, which makes feedback more concrete. Production mockups test whether a layout actually works at real dimensions. A business card looks different in the hand than on a monitor. A billboard needs checking from a distance. Tools like Photoshop, Figma, and dedicated mockup templates make it easy to drop artwork into pre-built scenes.

Where mockups help

A good mockup is honest. It should not hide flaws that will show up in the final product, whether that is a weak font choice or a color that shifts under different lighting.
