🟣 Purple Team

A collaborative effort between red and blue teams to improve security.

Purple Team

Purple team blends red team offense with blue team defense. The red team attacks. The blue team defends. The purple team sits between them, sharing what works and what does not. The goal is not to win an exercise. It is to improve detection and response. A red team finding that goes unaddressed is wasted effort. A purple team makes sure it gets fixed.

The work is collaborative and iterative. Red teamers run a technique. Blue teamers watch their tools and see what fires. If nothing alerts, they build a new detection rule. Then they run the technique again to confirm the rule works. That loop repeats across the attack lifecycle. Purple teaming is especially valuable for organizations that run regular red team exercises but struggle to turn findings into improvements. It also helps when red and blue teams operate in silos. Bringing them together breaks down the us-versus-them dynamic. The red team learns what the blue team can see. The blue team learns what the red team can do. Both get better. The output is a documented set of detection improvements, not just a report.

Purple team activities

Purple teaming turns red team findings into blue team capabilities. That translation is the whole point.
