An open relationship is a committed pairing that allows sex with others under agreed rules. The commitment stays. The exclusivity goes, in part or in full. Some couples allow nights away and ban love. Some allow love and ban surprise announcements at dinner. The details are the relationship.
Jealousy will visit. Compersion, the pleasure in a partner’s pleasure elsewhere, sometimes visits too. Neither feeling is a grade. What matters is whether the couple can talk when the feeling arrives instead of setting traps.
Safer-sex agreements need updating when the number of bodies changes. So do calendars. An open structure that eats every weekend and all the emotional labor is just an understaffed circus.
Do not open a collapsing relationship to save it. Extra people cannot do that job.
