🎛️ Mixing

Combining multiple audio tracks into a final version.

Mixing

Mixing is the process of combining multiple recorded tracks into a balanced stereo or surround version. The mixing engineer adjusts the relative levels, equalization, panning, and dynamic processing of each track so that every element can be heard clearly and the overall sound is coherent.

Creative decisions also occur during mixing. Reverb and delay can place instruments in a virtual space; automation can change balances over time; effects can alter timbre. The goal is a version that serves the song and translates well to different playback systems.

Mixing requires both technical knowledge and artistic judgment. Engineers work in acoustically treated rooms with accurate monitors. The process can take hours or days depending on the complexity of the material. A finished mix is then usually passed to mastering for final polish.
