A tryhard is someone who applies maximum effort in a setting where most people are keeping things casual. The label is usually critical. It suggests the person is treating a low-stakes situation like a championship match.
In games the tryhard uses the strongest tactics, the meta loadouts, and the most efficient strategies even in unranked or recreational modes. Their intensity can make the match less fun for everyone else. Outside games the word appears when someone over-prepares for a casual gathering or turns a friendly competition into a serious contest.
The line between healthy effort and tryhard behavior is subjective. What one group calls dedication another calls trying too hard. The term tends to surface when the effort feels mismatched to the context.
Some people reclaim the word and wear it with pride. Others treat it as an insult to avoid. Either way, calling someone a tryhard is a way of saying the social temperature of the activity has been raised higher than the group expected.
