📏 Edging

Trimming the borders of a lawn or garden bed.

Edging

A crisp edge between lawn and bed gives a garden a finished look. Edging is the practice of trimming or defining that boundary so grass does not creep into flower beds and soil stays where it belongs. The work can be done with a sharp spade, a half-moon edger, or powered tools.

Traditional methods cut a clean vertical face in the turf and lift a shallow trench. Permanent edging materials—brick, metal, or stone—hold the line with less frequent maintenance. Soft edging with plants such as lavender or box creates a living boundary that still needs occasional clipping.

Regular edging keeps maintenance lighter over the season. It also prevents mower wheels from damaging plants at the border. A well-defined edge makes even a modest garden appear carefully tended.
