🧤 Glove

A covering for the hand with separate fingers.

Glove

A glove covers the hand and usually has separate compartments for each finger. It protects against cold, heat, chemicals, or injury. It also serves decorative purposes. Gloves have been worn for thousands of years, from ancient Egyptian workers to medieval knights to modern surgeons. The design changes with the purpose, but the basic form remains.

Types are numerous. Winter gloves are lined with wool, fleece, or Thinsulate. Leather gloves are dressy and durable. Driving gloves have perforations for grip. Work gloves are reinforced with rubber or leather. Medical gloves are disposable and made of latex, nitrile, or vinyl. Sports gloves include batting gloves, cycling gloves, and goalkeeper gloves, each shaped for its task. Fingerless gloves leave the fingertips exposed for dexterity.

Fit matters. A glove that is too tight restricts circulation and tears at the seams. Too loose, and it slips and reduces grip. Sizing is based on the circumference of the hand and the length of the middle finger. Leather gloves stretch slightly with wear. Fabric gloves may shrink if washed incorrectly. Care depends on the material. Leather should be conditioned and dried away from heat. Knit gloves can be hand washed and laid flat to dry. A good pair of gloves lasts many seasons.
