Numeracy is the ability to understand and work with numbers. It goes beyond arithmetic. It includes reading graphs, estimating quantities, understanding percentages, and interpreting statistics. A numerate person can make sense of a loan offer, a medical risk, or a news chart.
Like literacy, numeracy is essential for modern life. Yet many adults struggle with it. Surveys in several countries find that a large share cannot calculate a percentage or compare prices per unit. This gap affects financial decisions, health choices, and civic participation.
Schools teach math, but numeracy is not the same as passing algebra. It is about applying mathematical thinking in context. A student who can solve equations but cannot figure out a tip is not fully numerate. The best instruction connects numbers to real situations.
