⬜ White Space

Empty space around elements that improves clarity and focus.

White Space

White space is the empty area between and around design elements. It is not wasted space. It gives the eye room to rest, separates groups, and signals relationships. A cramped layout feels anxious. A generous one feels calm and confident. The term covers margins, padding, line spacing, and the gaps between columns or buttons.

Designers distinguish macro and micro white space. Macro white space is the large areas around major blocks, like the margins of a page. Micro white space is the small gaps inside components, like the space between a label and its input field. Both matter. Too little micro white space makes text feel dense and hard to scan. Too little macro white space makes a page feel cluttered even when it holds few elements.

Where it works hardest

Apple, Muji, and many luxury brands use white space as a status signal. Empty space reads as confidence. It says the product does not need to shout.

Categorized under ecology but this is clearly about design. The definition is about visual clarity, not nature. Odd categorization.

As a graphic designer, white space is one of the most important tools in my kit. Clients always want to fill every inch and I have to push back.

Ecology? I think someone mixed up their categories. This is a design principle, not an environmental concept.
