⚫ Value

The lightness or darkness of a color.

Value

In color theory, value describes the lightness or darkness of a color. It is independent of hue. A red can be light or dark. A blue can be pale or deep. Value is what you see when you squint and the colors blur into grays. Artists often say value does more work than color in a composition. Strong value contrast creates drama and clarity. Low contrast feels subtle and atmospheric.

Value scales run from black to white. Designers use value to build hierarchy. A dark headline against a light background pops. A light gray footer recedes. In user interfaces, value contrast matters for accessibility. Text with insufficient value difference from its background fails readability standards. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines specify minimum contrast ratios, usually 4.5 to 1 for body text.

Working with value

Value is the skeleton of a design. Color gets the attention, but value determines whether the composition holds together.
