Corridor

A corridor is a long passageway that connects rooms along a building's interior. It is circulation space, but it is also more than that. Corridors shape how people move, how they meet, and how a building feels. A dark, narrow corridor feels institutional. A wide, daylit one feels welcoming.

Building codes regulate corridors heavily. They are part of the means of egress, so they must be wide enough, clear of obstructions, and protected from fire. Fire-rated doors and walls separate corridors from occupied rooms. Exit signs and emergency lighting guide occupants out.

Designers sometimes try to break up long corridors with daylight, artwork, or changes in ceiling height. Others embrace the corridor as a social space, widening it with seating or display areas. In hospitals, corridors must accommodate beds and equipment. In schools, they double as gathering space.

A good corridor is not just a hallway. It is a room you pass through.
