An ad exchange is a marketplace, nothing more glamorous than that. Publishers list ad space. Advertisers bid for it. Software handles the matching in milliseconds, usually before a webpage finishes loading.
The exchange sits between demand-side platforms, which represent buyers, and supply-side platforms, which represent sellers. When you open a news site, an auction fires instantly. Several advertisers bid, the highest wins, and their ad appears. You never see the machinery.
Why exchanges exist
- They replace slow manual deals with automated auctions
- They let small publishers sell inventory at scale
- They give advertisers access to huge pools of impressions
The tradeoff is control. Buying through an exchange is cheap and fast, but it can be hard to know exactly where your ad will land. Brand safety concerns pushed many advertisers to demand stricter filters and private marketplace deals.
