Display

Near the entrance a table holds folded sweaters arranged by color with a sign announcing a new collection. That arrangement is a display. Its purpose is to catch attention and encourage examination or purchase.

Displays appear in windows, on sales floors, at ends of aisles, and beside checkout lanes. Effective ones tell a small story or solve a problem for the shopper. Lighting, props, and product adjacency all influence performance. Retailers change displays regularly to keep the store looking fresh and to highlight seasonal or promotional goods.

A strong display can dramatically lift sales of the featured items. A cluttered or outdated one can be ignored or even deter shoppers. Visual merchandisers treat display work as both art and sales tool. The best displays make the merchandise the hero.
