A worshipper places food, flowers, incense, or money before a deity or on an altar. That gift is an offering. Offerings express gratitude, devotion, petition, or the desire to maintain right relationship with the sacred.
Ancient temples received animal sacrifices and agricultural produce. Many contemporary traditions use symbolic gifts, monetary donations, or the offering of bread and wine. The act of giving away something valuable acknowledges that all goods ultimately derive from a higher source. Ritual often includes consecration of the gifts.
Offerings support religious institutions and charitable work. They also train the giver in detachment. Debates arise when offerings become commercialized or when the poor feel excluded. At its root the offering is a gesture of belonging and dependence.
