Evangelism is the zealous spreading of the Christian gospel. It is the sharing of the good news. It is the telling of what God has done in Christ. It is the call to repentance and faith. It is the mission of the church. It is the command of Christ. Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations. That is the Great Commission. That is evangelism.
Evangelism takes many forms. It can be preaching to crowds. It can be sharing with a friend. It can be writing a book. It can be serving the poor. It can be living a holy life. It can be praying for the lost. It can be inviting someone to church. It can be telling your story. It can be explaining the gospel. The method varies. The message is the same. Christ died for our sins. He was buried. He was raised on the third day. He is Lord. He saves. He forgives. He gives eternal life. That is the good news. That is the gospel. That is what we share.
Evangelism in scripture
- Matthew 28:19-20: the Great Commission.
- Mark 16:15: preach the gospel to every creature.
- Acts 1:8: witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
- Romans 10:14: how are they to hear without someone preaching?
- 1 Peter 3:15: always be prepared to make a defense.
Evangelism is not optional. It is the church's mission. It is the believer's calling. It is the Spirit's work. It is the world's hope. Without evangelism, people do not hear. Without hearing, they do not believe. Without believing, they are not saved. That is the urgency. That is the motivation. That is the love. We share because we care. We speak because we believe. We go because he sends. We tell because he saves. Evangelism is not about numbers. It is about people. It is about one person. One person who needs to hear. One person who needs to know. One person who needs to believe. That is evangelism. That is the mission. That is the joy. That is the gospel.
