Unit loads need a common platform. A pallet is a flat, portable structure used to stack, store, and move goods as a single unit with forklifts or pallet jacks.
Wood remains the most common material; plastic and composite pallets serve hygiene-sensitive or export applications. Standard footprints such as the GMA and EUR sizes enable consistent racking and truck loading. Pallet quality affects stacking strength and the risk of product damage.
Empty pallet pools and exchange systems reduce waste and cost in closed loops. Broken pallets must be removed from service before they cause injury or collapse. Despite its simplicity, the pallet is one of the most important interfaces in material handling.
- Flat platform for unitizing goods
- Handled by forklifts and pallet jacks
- Standard sizes support efficient loading and storage
- Material and condition affect safety and performance
