Conventional insurance can conflict with certain religious principles regarding uncertainty and interest. Takaful is a cooperative system of Islamic insurance in which participants contribute to a common fund used to pay claims, structured to comply with Shariah principles that prohibit riba, gharar, and maysir.
Participants are co-owners of the fund rather than pure buyers of a commercial product. A takaful operator manages the fund for a fee or share of surplus under a wakalah or mudarabah model. Surplus may be distributed to participants; deficits may require additional contributions or interest-free loans from the operator.
Shariah boards oversee product design and investment of the fund in permissible assets. Takaful has grown in Muslim-majority markets and among Muslim communities elsewhere, offering family and general coverages that align with religious requirements while still providing practical risk protection.
