🔷 Pattern

A repeated decorative design on fabric.

Pattern

A pattern is a repeated decorative design on fabric. It can be printed, woven, knitted, embroidered, or dyed. The repetition creates rhythm and visual interest. Patterns range from simple stripes and checks to complex florals and geometrics. The scale, color, and placement all affect how a pattern reads on the body.

Types are numerous. Stripes run in one direction or cross to form checks. Polka dots are evenly spaced circles. Florals depict flowers or botanical motifs. Geometrics use shapes like triangles, hexagons, or chevrons. Animal prints mimic fur or skin. Abstract patterns resist easy description. Paisley uses a curved teardrop motif with Persian roots. Each pattern carries associations that shift with context and era.

Matching patterns across seams takes skill. On a large floral print, the design should flow continuously from one panel to the next. On stripes, the lines should align at the seams. This is called pattern matching, and it requires extra fabric and time. Cheap garments often ignore it. Expensive ones treat it as a mark of quality. The placement of a pattern on the body also matters. A large print at the bust draws the eye upward. A small print all over can read as texture rather than design.
