🛡️ Data Security

Protecting data from unauthorized access or corruption.

Data Security

Data security protects data from unauthorized access, corruption, and theft. It covers the data itself and the systems that store, process, and transmit it. Controls include encryption, access management, network security, and monitoring. The goal is to ensure confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The data should be readable only by authorized parties, accurate, and accessible when needed.

The threat landscape is broad. External attackers want to steal or ransom data. Insiders may leak it accidentally or intentionally. Misconfigured systems expose it. Third-party vendors lose it. Natural disasters destroy it. No single control addresses all of these. Defense in depth layers controls so that a failure in one does not mean total compromise. Data classification determines which controls apply. Public data needs less protection than confidential data. Regulated data like health records and payment cards has specific requirements. The controls should match the sensitivity. Overprotecting low-risk data wastes resources. Underprotecting high-risk data creates liability. The balance requires judgment. Data security is not a product you install. It is a practice you maintain. Threats evolve. Systems change. What was secure last year may be vulnerable today. The work never stops.

Data security controls

Data security protects the asset. Without it, the data is a liability waiting to happen.
