I always confused this with the rope knot until I started sailing. One knot equals one nautical mile per hour, simple as that.

Why is it called a knot though? Seems like an odd name for a unit of speed. Anyone know the origin?

My dad was in the navy and he'd correct anyone who said knots per hour. Drove him crazy.
