Fit is how clothing conforms to the shape of the wearer. It is not the same as size. Two garments can both be labeled medium and fit very differently. Fit depends on cut, proportions, and the body they are made for. A jacket can fit at the shoulders and be too tight at the waist. Trousers can fit at the hips and gap at the back. Good fit means the garment moves with the body, not against it.
Different garments have different fit priorities. For a blazer, the shoulders are the most important. They should sit cleanly without pulling. For trousers, the seat and rise matter most. For a dress, the bust and waist define the shape. Sleeves should end at the right point. Hems should fall where intended. Small adjustments, like taking in a waist or shortening a hem, can transform a garment.
Fit is personal. Bodies vary widely, and standard sizing cannot accommodate everyone. Many brands now offer extended sizes, but the grading often changes proportions rather than scaling them properly. Tailoring is the traditional solution. A good tailor can adjust almost any garment. Learning basic alterations, like hemming and taking in seams, gives anyone more control over how their clothes look and feel.
