A simp is someone who goes overboard trying to win the attention or approval of a person they like, usually without receiving much in return. The behavior often includes constant compliments, gifts, defense against any criticism, and a willingness to overlook clear disinterest.
The word started as internet slang and quickly became a common insult. Calling someone a simp suggests they have abandoned dignity in pursuit of affection. It is most often aimed at men, though the pattern appears across genders. The critique is less about kindness and more about the imbalance. Helping a friend is fine. Turning yourself into a doormat is not.
Online the term exploded through memes and short videos that mock exaggerated devotion. A typical example shows someone spending money or time far beyond what the situation warrants while the other person remains indifferent. The word can be playful among friends or genuinely cutting when used in argument.
Like many slang terms, it has stretched. Some people now use it for any display of politeness, which dilutes the original point. At its core, though, simp still marks the moment when admiration tips into self-erasure.
