⏸️ Rest

A pause in music where no note is played.

Rest

A rest is a measured silence in music. Just as notes indicate sound of a certain duration, rests indicate the absence of sound for a corresponding length. Each note value has a matching rest symbol.

Rests are essential to rhythm and phrasing. They give the music room to breathe, create anticipation, and allow important entries to stand out. In ensemble music, accurate counting of rests keeps every player synchronized even when not playing.

Composers use rests for dramatic effect as well as for practical spacing. A sudden silence can be as powerful as a loud chord. Performers must treat rests with the same precision they give to notes; coming in early or late after a rest disrupts the ensemble.
