📊 Sliding Scale Commission

A reinsurance commission that varies with loss experience.

Sliding Scale Commission

Reinsurance commissions need not be fixed. A sliding scale commission adjusts the ceding commission paid by the reinsurer to the cedent according to the loss ratio achieved on the ceded business. Better loss experience produces a higher commission; poorer experience reduces it.

The scale is defined in the treaty with a central loss-ratio point and corresponding commission, plus maximum and minimum commission levels. As actual losses develop, the commission is recalculated, often with a deficit or credit carry-forward to subsequent periods.

Sliding scales align the cedent’s compensation with underwriting results and give the reinsurer protection when losses deteriorate. They add administrative complexity and require clear rules for loss development and calculation timing. The mechanism is common in proportional property and casualty treaties.
