➕ Rider

An add-on to a policy that modifies or extends coverage.

Rider

Base policy forms rarely fit every need. A rider is an attachment that adds, modifies, or restricts coverage under the main policy. It becomes part of the contract and controls over conflicting language in the underlying form.

Life insurance riders can add accelerated death benefits, waiver of premium, or coverage for additional insureds. Property and liability riders may increase limits for specific property, add water backup coverage, or exclude a particular exposure. Each rider carries its own premium or rate adjustment.

Because riders change the original bargain, both parties must agree to them. They should appear on the declarations page so the complete contract is easy to identify. Reviewing all riders at each renewal prevents surprises about what is actually covered.
