🌾 Crop Insurance Program

A government-backed program protecting farmers from crop losses.

Crop Insurance Program

Private insurers alone cannot easily absorb the systemic risk of widespread drought. A crop insurance program is a structured public–private partnership in which the government subsidizes premiums, provides reinsurance, and sets rules while private companies sell and service the policies.

In the United States the Federal Crop Insurance Program is the primary example. Farmers choose coverage levels and plan types; insurers retain a portion of the risk and cede the rest to the government under a standard reinsurance agreement. Premium subsidies make higher coverage levels more affordable.

The program aims to provide a safety net that keeps producers in business after severe seasons without resorting to ad-hoc disaster bills. Continuous product development adds new crops and index-based options. Oversight focuses on actuarial soundness, program integrity, and equitable access across regions.
