Limited ground space need not limit gardening. A container garden grows plants in pots, troughs, hanging baskets, or any vessel with drainage holes. Balconies, patios, and even windowsills become productive growing areas when the right containers and potting mix are chosen.
Almost any plant can adapt to containers if the pot is large enough and watering is consistent. Herbs, salad greens, tomatoes, and flowering annuals thrive in them. Lightweight soilless mixes drain well and reduce weight on decks or roofs. Larger containers hold moisture longer and give roots more room.
Drainage is non-negotiable. Excess water must escape or roots will rot. Fertilizer needs rise because nutrients leach out with frequent watering. Group containers for visual impact and to create microclimates that shelter more tender plants.
