🌳 Arbor

A garden structure supporting climbing plants for shade.

Arbor

Walk under a well-placed arbor and the garden suddenly feels larger. An arbor is a freestanding or attached structure, usually open-sided, built to support climbing plants and create a shaded passageway or focal point. Gardeners use timber, metal, or stone to form arches, tunnels, or simple upright frames.

Roses, clematis, wisteria, and grapevines are classic companions. As the plants mature they cloak the framework, turning bare wood or iron into a living tunnel of leaves and flowers. The structure itself provides vertical interest in flat plots and defines outdoor rooms without solid walls.

Placement matters. Position an arbor over a path, at a gate, or as an entrance to a seating area. Make sure the posts sit deep enough to resist wind once the vines add weight. Regular pruning keeps growth healthy and prevents the structure from becoming overloaded.
