Trousers

Trousers are a garment covering the body from waist to ankles with separate legs. They are also called pants in North America. Trousers are one of the most common garments in the world, worn by all genders in most cultures. The design varies widely in fit, fabric, and formality. A pair of tailored wool trousers and a pair of sweatpants share a basic structure but serve very different purposes.

Types are numerous. Dress trousers are tailored, often with a crease. Jeans are denim. Chinos are cotton twill, casual but neat. Cargo pants have large pockets. Joggers have elastic cuffs and a drawstring waist. Palazzo pants are wide and flowing. Culottes end below the knee and resemble a skirt. Leggings are tight and stretchy, often worn as athletic or casual wear. Each type has its own fit conventions and occasions.

Fit is critical. The waist should sit comfortably without gaping or pinching. The rise, meaning the distance from crotch to waistband, affects proportion. Low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise suit different bodies and tastes. The leg shape matters: skinny, slim, straight, relaxed, bootcut, flare, and wide-leg all look different. Inseam length should break properly over the shoe. Fabric choices include wool, cotton, linen, denim, and synthetic blends. Care depends on the fabric. Wool trousers should be dry cleaned. Cotton and denim can be machine washed. Hanging trousers by the cuffs preserves the crease and prevents wrinkles.
