🕶️ Sunglasses

Eyewear that protects the eyes from sunlight.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are eyewear that protects the eyes from sunlight. They reduce glare, filter ultraviolet radiation, and shield against wind and dust. They are also a fashion accessory. The right pair can change a face, add mystery, or signal a mood. Sunglasses are one of the few items that are both purely functional and highly expressive.

Types vary. Aviators have teardrop lenses and thin metal frames. Wayfarers have thick plastic frames and a trapezoid shape. Round frames give a retro look. Cat-eye frames flare at the outer corners. Oversized frames cover more of the face. Sport sunglasses wrap around for stability and coverage. Mirrored lenses reflect light and hide the eyes. Polarized lenses reduce glare from water and roads. Prescription sunglasses combine vision correction with sun protection.

Materials include acetate, metal, titanium, and nylon. Acetate is a plant-based plastic that can be shaped and colored in many ways. Metal frames are lightweight and durable. Titanium is expensive but very light. Lenses are usually polycarbonate or glass. Polycarbonate is lighter and more impact-resistant. Glass is more scratch-resistant but heavier. UV protection is the most important feature. Look for 100 percent UV400 protection. Darker lenses do not necessarily mean better protection. Tint affects contrast and color perception. Care involves cleaning with a microfiber cloth and storing in a case to avoid scratches.
