🥷 Attacker

A person or entity that attempts to compromise a system.

Attacker

An attacker is anyone trying to compromise a system without authorization. The word covers a wide range. Script kiddies run tools they do not understand. Organized crime groups operate ransomware affiliates with help desks and profit sharing. Nation-state teams work on salary, with months of patience and custom malware. Insider threats sit inside the building with valid credentials. Hacktivists target organizations they disagree with. Each group has different skills, resources, and goals.

The financial motive dominates. Ransomware payments, stolen credentials, and card data all have ready buyers on underground markets. Initial access brokers sell footholds to ransomware crews. Exploit developers sell zero-days to the highest bidder. The ecosystem is professionalized. Attackers specialize, subcontract, and take a cut. That structure makes attribution harder. The person who broke in may not be the person who deployed the ransomware, and neither may be the person who profits most. Defenders should assume a motivated adversary with time and resources. The question is not whether someone will try. It is whether the defenses hold when they do.

Attacker motivations

Not every attacker is a genius. Many are opportunists scanning for unpatched systems. Patching closes the door they were counting on.
