Aircraft live in very large buildings. Hangars shelter them from weather, provide space for maintenance, and hold the tools and parts needed to keep them flying. The largest can hold several widebody jets at once.
Design revolves around clear span. Columns would block aircraft movement, so hangars use long-span trusses or arches to cover huge areas without internal supports. Doors are another challenge, sliding or folding to open the full width of the building.
Common hangar types
- Rectangular hangars with sliding doors
- Arch hangars with curved roofs
- T-shaped hangars for maintenance layouts
- Sunshades for temporary protection
Fire protection is critical. Fuel, hydraulic fluid, and composite materials all burn, and a fire in a hangar can destroy millions in assets and put lives at risk.
