🧍 Static Character

A character who does not change throughout a story.

Static Character

A static character is a character who does not change throughout a story. They end the story the same person they were at the beginning. They may face challenges, but their core beliefs, personality, and values remain fixed.

Static characters are not necessarily bad characters. They can be anchors in a shifting world. Sherlock Holmes is largely static. So is Atticus Finch, though his circumstances change. In many stories, the static character serves as a foil to a dynamic one. Their stability highlights the protagonist’s growth. Flat characters are different. A flat character has little depth. A static character can be round and complex but unchanging. Some genres rely on static characters. Detective series often keep the protagonist the same book after book. The appeal is the puzzle, not the person’s growth. Static does not mean boring. It means constant.
