HPV is a group of common viruses spread by skin contact, including sexual contact. Many infections leave on their own. Some strains cause genital warts. Others cause cancers of the cervix, anus, throat, and other sites. Vaccines given before exposure prevent a large share of the dangerous types.
Condoms reduce risk and do not cover every inch of skin that can shed virus. That is frustrating and still worth the reduction. Cervical screening exists because quiet infections can do slow damage.
A diagnosis is not a morality play. Most sexually active adults meet HPV at some point. Partners can talk about vaccines, wart treatment, and screening without holding a trial.
If you have children or younger relatives, the vaccine conversation is one of the clearer public-health wins of the last twenty years. Use it.
