Idolatry is the worship of idols or anything other than God. It is the sin of putting something in God's place. It can be a statue. It can be a person. It can be a possession. It can be a desire. It can be a career. It can be a relationship. It can be a hobby. It can be a self. Anything that takes God's place is an idol. Anything that is loved more than God is an idol. Anything that is trusted more than God is an idol. Anything that is served more than God is an idol. Anything that is worshiped more than God is an idol. Idolatry is the root of all sin. It is the breaking of the first commandment. You shall have no other gods before me. Idolatry is serious. Idolatry is dangerous. Idolatry is deadly. Idolatry is idolatry.

Idolatry is condemned throughout the Bible. The first commandment forbids it. The second commandment forbids it. The prophets denounced it. The apostles warned against it. Paul said covetousness is idolatry. He said greed is idolatry. He said the idolater will not inherit the kingdom of God. John said little children, keep yourselves from idols. Idolatry is not just an ancient problem. It is a modern problem. It is a human problem. It is a heart problem. The heart is an idol factory. It makes idols out of anything. It makes idols out of everything. It makes idols out of nothing. The heart is restless. It seeks. It clings. It worships. It needs God. Without God, it makes idols. With God, it finds rest. With God, it finds peace. With God, it finds joy. With God, it finds love. With God, it finds life. With God, it finds freedom. With God, it finds salvation. With God, it finds God. That is the cure. That is the antidote. That is the gospel. That is the hope. That is the love. That is the worship. That is the truth. That is the life. That is God. Worship him alone. Love him alone. Serve him alone. Trust him alone. Obey him alone. Praise him alone. Thank him alone. Adore him alone. Glorify him alone. Enjoy him alone. That is the first commandment. That is the greatest commandment. That is the only commandment. That is the cure for idolatry. That is the call. That is the command. That is the promise. That is the hope. That is the life. That is God. No idols. No other gods. No idols. No idolatry. Only God. Only Christ. Only the Spirit. Only the Trinity. Only the Lord. Only the Savior. Only the King. Only the Father. Only the Son.
