⛪ Church

A building used for Christian worship.

Church

On Sunday morning people gather in a building set apart for Christian worship. That building is a church. The same word also names the community of believers itself.

Architectural forms range from simple meeting houses to vast cathedrals with soaring vaults and stained glass. The space ordinarily contains a place for proclamation of the word, an altar or table for communion, and seating for the congregation. Art, music, and ritual fill the building with meaning accumulated over generations.

Local churches belong to larger denominations or operate independently. They host worship, education, charity, and life-cycle ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The physical church serves as a visible landmark of faith in the landscape and a practical center for communal life.

I'm not religious, but I appreciate the architecture and quiet atmosphere of old churches. They feel like living history.

Is this term used only for Christian places of worship or can it apply to other religions too?

Our local church runs a food bank every Saturday. It's more than a building to a lot of people here.
