🎺 Trumpet

A brass instrument with valves and a bright tone.

Trumpet

The trumpet is a brass instrument with a cylindrical bore and a cup-shaped mouthpiece. The player produces sound by buzzing the lips and selects pitches with three valves that redirect the air through additional lengths of tubing.

Its bright, penetrating tone makes it ideal for fanfares, melodic statements, and powerful ensemble writing. In the orchestra the trumpets often take the highest brass lines. In jazz the trumpet has been a leading solo instrument from Louis Armstrong onward. The instrument also appears in bands, popular music, and solo repertoire.

Technique centers on embouchure control, efficient use of air, and precise valve work. Different mutes dramatically alter the color. The trumpet’s upper range is especially brilliant and requires careful development to maintain endurance and accuracy.
