📡 Telematics

Technology that monitors vehicle location and performance.

Telematics

Vehicles can report on themselves. Telematics is the technology that combines telecommunications and informatics to monitor vehicle location, movement, and status remotely.

Onboard devices collect GPS position, speed, idle time, fault codes, and sometimes cargo-sensor data, then transmit them to central platforms. Fleet managers use the information for dispatch, maintenance, safety coaching, and theft recovery. Integration with transportation management systems improves estimated arrival times.

Driver privacy and data overload are practical concerns. Well-designed programs focus on a few actionable metrics rather than drowning supervisors in raw feeds. Telematics has shifted fleet management from periodic reports to continuous operational awareness.
