Not every article leads with the latest development. A feature story is a longer, more narrative piece that explores a person, trend, or issue in depth, often emphasizing human experience and context over breaking developments.
Features use scene, character, and structure closer to storytelling than to the inverted pyramid. They still rest on reported fact and attribution; the difference lies in pace, focus, and literary technique. Magazines and weekend newspaper sections have long been natural homes for the form; digital outlets now publish features as well.
A successful feature leaves the reader with understanding and emotional resonance that a brief news item cannot supply. The reporting investment is higher, and the editing more intensive, but the lasting impact on audiences often justifies the cost.
- Longer narrative article with human or thematic focus
- Uses storytelling techniques within factual reporting
- Contrasts with brief hard-news structure
- Requires deeper reporting and editing
