⛏️ Spade

A digging tool with a flat blade and long handle.

Spade

Turning soil and moving earth require a sturdy blade. A spade is a digging tool with a flat or slightly curved blade fixed to a long handle. The sharp edge slices into the ground; the gardener drives it with foot pressure and levers the soil free.

Digging spades have longer blades for general work; border spades are smaller and lighter for use among established plants. Stainless or coated blades resist rust and slide more easily through heavy soil. A comfortable handle length reduces back strain.

Use a spade for cutting edges, lifting sod, digging planting holes, and turning compost. Keep the blade clean and sharp for efficient cutting. Proper technique—bending at the knees and keeping the back relatively straight—prevents injury during heavy digging sessions.
