🌱 Lawn

An area of short mown grass in a garden.

Lawn

A lawn is an area of closely mown grass that forms a living carpet in many gardens. It provides open space for walking, play, and visual calm between more densely planted beds. Traditional lawns use fine-leaved grasses that form a dense sward when regularly cut and fed.

Establishment can be from seed or turf. Once growing, the lawn needs mowing, occasional feeding, and attention to drainage and compaction. Over-watering and excessive fertilizer produce soft growth susceptible to disease. Leaving grass slightly longer in hot weather reduces stress.

Modern approaches sometimes replace pure grass with mixed plantings or reduce lawn area in favor of ground covers and meadow plantings. Where a traditional lawn remains, thoughtful care keeps it healthy without excessive inputs.
