🔑 Private Key

A secret cryptographic code that authorizes transactions.

Private Key

A private key is a secret number that controls access to your crypto. It is a long string of letters and numbers, generated randomly when you create a wallet. Whoever holds the private key controls the funds. There is no password reset. There is no customer support. Lose the key and the coins are gone forever. That is the deal with self-custody. It is also the reason crypto security is so unforgiving.

The private key is used to sign transactions. When you send crypto, your wallet uses the private key to create a digital signature. The network verifies the signature against your public key. If it matches, the transaction is valid. Nobody can forge the signature without the private key. That is the cryptography that makes crypto work. Most wallets hide the private key behind a seed phrase, which is easier to back up. The seed phrase can regenerate all the private keys in your wallet. Never share either one. Not with a support agent. Not with a website. Not with anyone. Anyone who asks for your private key or seed phrase is trying to steal from you.

Private key rules

A private key is not a password. You cannot change it. You can only protect it or lose it.
